This conference is a serious attack on human rights and creates dangerous confusion :

  • It is a purely commercial promotion of surrogacy, organised by major and mostly American companies (Extraordinary conceptions, Worldwide Surrogacy, etc.). This promotion conference is being held in Brussels while Belgium is debating a ban of this practice. Several legislative proposals are being debated, which would prohibit commercial transactions linked to surrogacy.
  • The conference is hosted by the BIP (House of the Brussels Region, 2 rue Royale, Brussels), which is the seat of the government of the Region of Brussels. This gives the impression that the conference is supported by the Belgian political authorities in a time where surrogacy is not formally authorised in Belgium and where the parliament has not decided this matter.
  • This conference promotes openly and organises surrogacy on European territory, although it is explicitly prohibited in several european countries.

No Maternity Traffic (NMT) underlines that surrogacy makes of children ojects of contracts with the aim to create and seperate them from their mother. NMT denounces this new form of slavery.

Surrogacy violates European and international law, particularly the conventions of the rights of the child (1989), on the elimination of all form of discrimination (1979), on adoption (1967 and 1993), against slavery (2005), on human rights and biomedicine (1997).

No Maternity Traffic is an initiative launched by the « International Union for the abolition of surrogacy ».

The International Union for the abolition of surrogacy works with all available legal means for an international prohibition the commercialisation of the body, especially through surrogacy. The Union was founded at the initiative of national and European associations for the respect of childhood, of women, of human dignity and rights,, particularly Action pour la Famille/Actie voor het Gezin, European Center for law & justice, l’Appel des professionnels de l’enfance, Alliance VITA, FAFCE, La Manif Pour Tous, l’Agence Européenne des Adoptés, Care for Europe, European Dignity Watch, Fondazione Novae Terrae
